Jewish Diaspora

Sunday December 28, 2024 7:00 PM
Benaroya Hall

Gretchen Yanover, cello

We celebrate the diversity of Jewish music with instrumental works from the St. Petersburg Society for Jewish Folk Music plus a variety of songs in English, Hebrew, Ladino, and Yiddish. Composers include Léon Algazi, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Joel Engel, Lori Laitman, and Lazare Saminsky.

“Schenkman and Pomerantz capture the yearning of the Jewish spirit as it peers out through the windows of classical art song…invites the listener into the deeper mysteries of the Jewish soul.”

“Steven Greenman is a poet of the fiddle, a demiurge of sound. When he plays, the landscape of the Jewish shtetl and the Hasidic courts comes to life.”

– Janusz Makuch, Director of Jewish Culture Festival of Krakow, Poland
